Road Update 11 July 2015 Jammu Srinagar :
Route: Jammu – Rajaori – Poonch – Peer ki Galli – Srinagar
Jammu – Rajaori: Its patchy and scenic. No rains encountered enroute. Don’t go to the edges.
Rajaori : Hotels are dirt cheap (200-400) There was rain yesterday night. Power cuts are too much in this area so forget recharging any gadgets.
Rajaori – Poonch : its not good. If it rains in Rajori stay in hotel unless you are too adventurous. The road patches are done in river stones that are oval. So you won’t get grip if its wet. Have food here.
Poonch – it was cloudy with occasionally the blue sky playing peek-a-boo. It rained slightly here at night.
Poonch – Peer ki galli : Glacial road. Too many glaciers. Not so bad except a few patches or when near the glaciers as they came down to meet the road bringing the mountain along. You go up to an elevation of more than 12600ft. from sea level. So drink lots of water.
Peer ki Galli : At an elevation of 12000feet approx its not cold but air is thin. You and your bike especially will feel the difference. You get Bread pakoda, egg pakoda, Etc here since Rajouri. Military checking is prominent but not strict. I befriended them easily.
Peer ki Galli – Shopian : Blue sky playing peek-a-boo. Amazing roads but don’t go over board. Beware of the stones placed on a perfectly clean road. I blasted my tire here today. Puncture shop is at the start of Shopian of a guy from Patna, Bihar. Its gentle downhill, so even if u screw up it won’t be a problem.
Shopian – Perfect example of crazy people. They will fall in love with your luggage laden bike in pehli nazar. But they are too good. One uncle literally forced me to take 5kgs of fruits from his orchard as gift of Kashmir, into my already overloaded bag. That’s my dinner now tongue emoticon
Shopian – Srinagar : 2 lane himalayan highway. The main bridge was blasted away with uprooted trees so they have a stony bypass now just after the town.
Srinagar : Overcrowded. And everything is closed after 6 due to Ramzan. So go ahead and explore the city in the evening.
The entire route is immensely scenic. But don’t waste time clicking. Hotels are scanty.
